Helping Children and Teens Navigate Life's Challenges

Watching your child struggle can be difficult. You may notice changes in their mood, increased anxiety, challenges at school, or difficulty navigating relationships and everyday emotions. Sometimes it's hard to know whether what your child is experiencing is a normal part of growing up or something that could benefit from additional support.

At CU Counseling, JB Nesse, LCSW, provides individualized counseling for children, adolescents, and young adults. Our goal is to create a safe, supportive environment where young people can better understand themselves, develop healthy coping skills, and navigate life's challenges.

CU Counseling serves children and families throughout Champaign, Urbana, and the surrounding communities.

When Might a Child Benefit from Counseling?

  • Difficulty managing emotions or stress

  • Challenges with friendships and social relationships

  • School-related stress or difficulty adjusting to changes

  • The effects of trauma or difficult life experiences

  • Major family or life transitions

  • Low self-esteem or difficulty navigating adolescence

You don't have to wait until a problem becomes overwhelming to seek support.

What Does Child Therapy Look Like?

Beginning counseling can feel like a big step for both parents and children. The process starts with understanding your child's needs, experiences, and goals.

For children ages 12 and under, the first appointment is typically a parent consultation. This gives parents an opportunity to share concerns, ask questions, and discuss how counseling may support their child.

From there, counseling is tailored to the child's developmental stage and individual needs.
